In essence, painting is paint on canvas, or paint on paper. I experience the power of that combination at its best where these two, paint and carrier, almost express themselves without the painter adding too much to it. A single line, or, for example, a monochrome plane, already express full sensory richness if the chosen paint and the carrier are respected in themselves.
